Anytime when you receive an unsolicited call, you might be wondering how can spammers get to know your phone number? They can collect it via:

  • social media (people release their personal information to public);
  • online surveys;
  • phishing sites;
  • hackers(they hack the database of sites where you have submitted your personal info).

Phone fraudsters use different causes for call. They can introduce themselves as staff, representatives of IRS(Internal Revenue Service), SSA(Social Security Administration), CRA(Canada Revenue Agency), or even a police officer, telling that you have a legal problem and need to call them back as soon as possible.

They can say they are with Microsoft and your computer has been compromised and need their help, asking to take over your computer.

They can also say that you have won a lottery prize or you have been granted for a lower interest rate credit card, phishing for your personal information. Some scammers can send you messages claiming there is a fund transfer for you and you need to click the link to confirm.

Here are some major phone scams we have summarized:

    Robo call left message claiming 2 amounts charged to my Master Card with instructions that if these were fraudulent to call back to report. Since this card is through my local bank and they would call me directly, it's obviously a scam to get my card number. I'm old, but not stupid!

    this number calls several times a day to my cell phone. I don't know what it is about because they speak in a foreign language. Sounds like oriental.

    Called me on my cell at 11:30 (I am at work, leave me alone.) I didn't answer, so I don't know what it was for. No voicemail either. I have no idea how they got my number.

    Left a message on my phone. It was a recording and it had apparently started leaving the message while the outgoing message was still on. All I heard was something about this being my final chance to resolved the issue before it goes to some kind of court. Obviously I ignored it..
